about us

we believe composting is important work,

mindful work,

care work

we’re proud of our roots

We were born out of the lockdown rush for black gold; our rural community needed access to good quality and affordable compost.

On paper we are a small local waste management company collecting from local food businesses, reducing food waste miles and pollution, and distributing pay-as-you-feel compost locally to anyone that wants to grow food.

But we see it as so much more than that. Our mission cascades across borders and languages from rural to urban settings and through novice to enthusiastic composters.

We love the poetry of waste transformation, the awe of the microscopes and the scent of well cured and cared for decomposition.

Join our criw

Making compost takes time and care and can be joyful when done collectively and mindful when done solo.

If you would like to meet the compost and other compostistas, to get your hands mucky, to turn a heap or learn more about the magical worlds beneath sign up for news of our regular volunteer sessions.

We take time together to learn on the heap and also at the microscope or within an informal classroom. We share the art of composting and the science of the soil food web, as well as celebrate the summer through market stalls and events like agricultural shows.

If you'd like to hear more about our volunteer sessions and socials or you have an idea for a collaboration project or funding application we might do together please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you.

how we're organised

regulation

we're licensed with Natural Resources Wales as a micro-waste haulier, waste manager and composter

pay

we are proud to pay well above the Living Wage for employees and contractors and that's also well above typical rates for waste workers.  we know this work can be difficult and physically demanding at times, it can also be dangerous and deserves dignity, decent protective clothing and effective health and safety, always.

we fund our Compost Caretakers’ wages directly from the food waste collection income from local businesses, topped up with the donations we receive for compost, so if you are part of that you are creating a local job - thank you!
